Ryan Smith (left) and Janae Jones are this week's Big South Indoor Field Athletes of the Week.

After successful performances at the Liberty Open, Liberty redshirt senior Ryan Smith and freshman Janae Jones have been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's and Women's Indoor Field Athletes of the Week.

Smith is now a six-time Big South Athlete of the Week during his career, while the honor was Jones' first. Smith and Jones are the first Liberty track & field athletes to garner Big South weekly accolades this season.

For the third straight meet, Smith swept the men's shot put and weight throw championships at Saturday's Liberty Open. His winning weight throw of 64-4 set a new personal best and moved him up to No. 21 nationally in the event. Smith's shot put mark, 56-11.5, established a season best. He currently tops the Big South performance list in both throwing events.

Jones triple jumped a personal-best 39-9.75 to win the event, top the Big South yearly list and climb to the No. 3 spot in program history. The freshman also helped the Lady Flames win the 4 x 400 relay in a time of 3:59.71 and placed fourth in the long jump with a 17-3.25 leap.

Liberty will return to action Saturday, when the Flames and Lady Flames compete in the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup for the sixth year in a row. The meet will begin at 9 a.m. at Penn State's Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.
