Athletics Recognizes Gleaning for the World's Efforts
During Liberty's men's basketball game against Charleston Southern on Saturday, the Liberty University Athletics Department publicly recognized Gleaning for the World's efforts in helping victims of last fall's Hurricane Sandy.
Following the devastating hurricane that hit the New England area the hardest in October, Liberty Athletics spearheaded a fundraising effort surrounding its Nov. 10 football game against Stony Brook, an institution located on Long Island and was affected by the storm.
Liberty donated $1 for each fan in attendance at the game and the Flames' #FillTheBill campaign was able to raise $14,419 toward the Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.
Liberty Athletics and Gleaning for the World had previously partnered on other fundraising efforts, making it easier for the two organizations to work together once again.
Liberty gave the $14,419 to Gleaning for the World, who was then able to use those funds to transport $193,000 worth of essential supplies to the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy.
During the men's basketball game on Saturday, Liberty's Director of Athletics Jeff Barber ceremonially presented Gleaning for the World President Ron Davidson and Vice President Bob Day with a check for the donation amount.
The presentation also allowed Liberty Athletics and Gleaning for the World to thank all the fans who attended the Flames' final home football game of the year, making the donation possible.
