Lady Flames to Face Appalachian State on Sunday
The Liberty women's tennis team will play its first dual match of the 2013 season on Sunday against the Appalachian State Mountaineers, beginning at 4 p.m. at the Greenbrier Resort in Sulphur Springs, W.Va.
The Lady Flames posted an 11-12 overall record in 2012, including a 4-4 mark in Big South matches. Despite a slow start, Liberty finished the season winning seven out of its final eight contests.
After graduating only one player from last year's squad, the Lady Flames return an experienced group of players who accounted for 85 percent of the team's singles victories in 2012.
Jenkins and Alexandra Sheeran return as the Lady Flames' top doubles tandem from a year ago, posting nine wins, including seven in the No. 2 position. Richard and Yang finished with eight doubles wins during the 2012 season, playing the majority of their matches in the No. 1 position.
Liberty opened the 2013 portion of its schedule last weekend at the Florida Gulf Coast Invite in Fort Myers, Fla. Cameron Richard highlighted play for the Lady Flames, claiming a title in the Flight 3 singles consolation bracket.
Sunday's match will mark the sixth all-time meeting between Liberty and Appalachian State. The Mountaineers won the most recent tilt between the two squads, defeating the Lady Flames 4-3 last season in a match that was also contested at the Greenbrier Resort. The Mountaineers lead the overall series 4-1.
Appalachian enters its match with Liberty holding a 1-1 record on the season. The Mountaineers opened the year with a 7-0 victory over North Carolina A&T, before falling to East Carolina 4-3.
After Sunday's match, the Lady Flames welcome Charlotte to Lynchburg for their 2013 home opener on Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. The match will take place at Liberty's indoor tennis facility, the Sports Racket.
