Liberty Wins Nine Events at VMI Winter Relays
The Lady Flames recorded a half dozen first-place finishes, including a trio of running events. Brittany Heath (Fr., Freeport, Grand Bahamas) raced to the 400-meter title in a time of 1:05.00. Rebekah Ricksecker (So., Laurel, Del.) and Ashley Teer (Fr., British Columbia) took the top two places in the 800-meter run. Ricksecker's winning time was 2:24.28. Finally, the Lady Flames won the 4 x 400-meter relay in 4:12.89. The relay team members included Tra' Screen (So., Lynchburg, Va.), Jennifer Ward (Jr., Martinsville, Va.), Sheronica Henton (Fr., Raeford, N.C.) and Marie Williams (Jr., Tampa, Fla.).
In the women's field events, Caitlyn Sutterfield (Sr., Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and Lacey Cunningham (Fr., Spring Hill, Kan.) were the shot put champion and runner-up. Sutterfield threw the shot 40-0.75. Emily Funderburke (So., Fredericksburg, Va.) finished first in the pole vault with a 9-5.75 clearance and Williams took the long jump with a leap of 16-10.75.
All three Liberty men who won their events did so in field events. Bartels (So., Grantham, Pa.) threw 45-3.75 to win the shot put, with Hoskins (Jr., Garden City, Texas) and Barrett (Jr., Thornton, W.Va.) following less than a foot behind.
Clendon Henderson (Jr., Meadow, Texas) enabled the Liberty men to sweep the throwing events, winning the weight throw with a season-best mark of 54-6.75. Donald Manns (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.) took the triple jump crown, in just his second meet for the Flames. His winning jump was 44-6.75.
Liberty will return home on Friday for its final tune-up before the Feb. 17-18 Big South Championships. North Carolina A&T, Radford, Richmond, VCU and VMI will also compete in the meet at the Tolsma Indoor Track Center.
