Jarred Cornfield's mile time of 4:17.94 on Friday established a new personal best.

Liberty redshirt sophomore Jarred Cornfield clocked a personal-best time of 4:17.94 in the mile Friday evening, highlighting the Flames' light day of action at the Virginia Tech Invitational.

Cornfield's effort, which is the fastest in the Big South Conference at this early stage of the 2012-13 indoor track & field season, placed him 12th of 40 runners in the event.

Meanwhile, sophomore Jacy Christiansen took over the conference lead in the women's mile with a 5:08.25 clocking. Christiansen, who also tops the Big South performance list for the 5K, came in 13th of 28 entrants on Friday.

Freshman teammate Courtney Russo made a solid collegiate track & field debut, finishing 17th in the women's mile in 5:15.56. Russo crossed the line just ahead of High Point's Kayleigh Perry, the fifth-place finisher at the 2012 Big South Women's Cross Country Championship.

Six more Liberty distance runners will compete at the Virginia Tech Invitational on Saturday, with the first event at Rector Field House slated for 11 a.m.

Meanwhile, most of Liberty's indoor track & field competitors will take part in the Wake Forest Invitational, beginning Saturday at 9 a.m. The meet will be held at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C., which is the site of the 2013 Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships.
