2013 Women's Tennis Spring Preview
The Liberty Lady Flames tennis team enters the 2013 season with high hopes for success after concluding the 2012 spring season winning seven out of its final eight regular-season matches. The Lady Flames graduated only one player from last year's squad and return an experienced group of players who accounted for 85 percent of the team's singles victories in 2012.
As the Liberty women's tennis team continues to make preparations for the 2013 spring schedule, the Flames Sports Network's Nick Pierce had a chance to catch up with first-year head coach Jeff Maren.
During the interview, Maren discusses the Lady Flames' upcoming tournament at Florida Gulf Coast. Maren also takes a look at the spring schedule and highlights a couple of the team's returning players.
Brittany Yang, who led the team with 11 singles victories, returns along with Cameron Richard and Rebekah Jenkins who recorded 10 and nine victories, respectively. Richard finished the 2012 season on a seven-match winning streak. The junior paced the Lady Flames with a 5-3 mark in Big South play.
Additionally, Liberty returns juniors Alexandra Sheeran and Annisha Domenech, along with sophomores Jessie Boda and Nicola Wellman. Sheeran contested all but two of her matches in the 2012 spring season in the No. 1 position, tallying a total of seven victories. Wellman recorded eight singles wins, while Domenech and Boda notched six and three wins, respectively, in 2012.
Valerie Thong is the lone freshman on the squad entering the 2013 season. The California native posted four victories during the fall tournament schedule, including a pair of wins at the Liberty Fall Classic.
Jenkins and Sheeran return as the Lady Flames' top doubles tandem from a year ago, posting nine wins, including seven in the No. 2 position. Richard and Yang finished with eight doubles wins during the 2012 season, playing the majority of their matches in the No. 1 position.
Liberty opens its 2013 spring schedule this weekend in Fort Myers, Fla. at the Florida Gulf Coast Invite. The Lady Flames' first home match of the year is on Feb. 9 at the Sports Racket against Charlotte.
