Kelly Repeats as Capital One Academic All-American
For the second year in a row, Liberty wide receiver Pat Kelly has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America® Football Division I first team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The senior has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA in his pursuit of an exercise science degree. He is the second Liberty student-athlete to be named to multiple CoSIDA Academic All-America® first-team listings. Mike Gelatt, of the men's soccer team, accomplished the feat for the first time with CoSIDA Academic All-America® first-team selections in 2007 and 2008.
Overall, Kelly is the 18th student-athlete in athletics department history to be named to a CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I team and he is the sixth to be named to multiple teams.
Kelly is the fourth football player in program history to be named to a CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I team and the eighth football player to be named to the top collegiate academic team in the country.
Kelly was one of five student-athletes to repeat as selections on the 2012 Capital One Division I Academic All-America® football first team. Joining Kelly in this elite group was Alabama offensive lineman Barrett Jones, Nebraska running back Rex Burkhead, Northwestern offensive lineman Patrick Ward and Penn State defensive lineman Pete Massaro.
Kelly was one of two first-team wide receiver selections, as he was joined by Colgate's Chris Looney, a senior with a 3.90 GPA in international relations/history.
Kelly's additional academic honors include a three-time member of the Big South Presidential Honor Roll (2009, 2010 and 2011) and being named to the 2011 FCS Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Star team.
On the field, Kelly led all Big South receivers and ranked No. 11 in the country in receptions per game (7.27). He finished the year with 80 receptions, falling one short of tying the program's single-season record held by Pat Nelson (81, 1991).
Kelly set a program and Big South single-game record during the 2012 season, finishing the Coastal Carolina game on Oct. 27 with 16 receptions.
Kelly finished his career with 2,107 receiving yards, making him the fifth player in program history and seventh in Big South history to eclipse the 2,000-yard career receiving mark.
