Omotola Named Big South WBB Player of the Week
Liberty redshirt senior forward/center Tolu Omotola has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the conference announced this afternoon.
Omotola's first career Big South Player of the Week nod comes after she played a key role in Liberty's first two victories of the 2012-13 season, versus Grambling State and Sacred Heart in the Preseason WNIT. The Houston, Texas native paced the Lady Flames in both scoring (13.5 ppg) and steals (2.0 spg) for the week, while also pulling down 5.0 rebounds per contest and shooting 73.3 percent (11-of-15) from the field.
Omotola scored a team-high 13 points during an 81-50 Preseason WNIT victory over Grambling State, Friday evening at the Vines Center. She also tallied five rebounds, three steals and a blocked shot against the Lady Tigers, while making all six of her field goal attempts. It was the first time in her career that Omotola was perfect from the field when attempting at least five shots.
The following day, Omotola contributed 14 points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal to Liberty's 68-63 win against Sacred Heart. Ten of her points came during the second half, as the Lady Flames overcame a halftime deficit. Her steal happened during the game's closing seconds, sealing the Lady Flames' triumph against the defending Northeast Conference champion Pioneers.
Omotola will play her next two games in her home state of Texas, beginning with a Tuesday evening contest at No. 13 Texas A&M. Tipoff at Reed Arena is set for 8 p.m. Eastern. The Lady Fames will then travel to No. 1/3 Baylor on Friday for an 8 p.m. contest against the reigning NCAA Division I national champion Bears.
