Flames Fall to Bryant, 6-2
The Bryant Bulldogs broke a 2-2 tie with a two-out run in the seventh inning, en route to a 6-2 victory over the Liberty Flames, Tuesday at Worthington Stadium.
Despite a strong outing from starter Jared Lyons, the Flames drop their second straight contest and fall to 16-3 on the year. Bryant moves to 5-8.
The visiting Bulldogs jumped on the scoreboard in the second inning, striking for two runs with two outs. First baseman Jamie Skagerlind doubled and a scored on left fielder Jordan Mountford's first home run of the year, giving Bryant a 2-0 advantage.
Held hitless through the first five innings, Liberty broke through with three hits and plated two runs to knot the contest in the sixth. With one out, center fielder Andy Smith singled for the first Flames' hit. After second baseman Bryan Aanderud was hit by a pitch and designated hitter Tyler Cox walked to load the bases, pinch hitter Michael Robertson singled to plate two runs and tie the contest at 2-2.
In the top of the seventh inning, Bryant went back in front for good. With one out, designated hitter Mike Delponte was hit by a pitch and two batters later, moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Skagerlind followed with a single to bring home Delponte to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 edge.
Bryant added three insurance runs in the top of the eighth. After Mountford singled to lead off the frame, catcher Jonathan Scott lifted his first home run of the year over the left field fence to up the Bulldog advantage to 5-2. Later in the inning, Bryant added a run on a RBI double by second baseman David Soltis for the final score of 6-2.
Lyons drops to 0-2 on the year. The left-hander allowed three runs on four hits over seven innings. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.
Bryant reliever Jonathan Cohen moves to 1-0 on the year. The second Bulldog pitcher in the contest, Cohen pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. He walked one batter.
Three Bryant pitchers limited the Flames to four hits in the game, while Bryant collected seven hits. Skagerlind and Mountford had two hits each for the Bulldogs.
Liberty will host the James Madison Dukes, tomorrow afternoon at Worthington Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
