Brown Named BSC Preseason Player of the Year
During the annual conference kickoff event, Liberty was also tabbed the preseason favorite to win the league's conference title for the fifth year in a row.
The Flames garnered all but three of the 18 first-place votes in the annual poll conducted by the league's head coaches and selected media members. Liberty finished first in the poll with 123 total points, followed by Stony Brook in second place with 104 points and two first-place votes. Coastal Carolina, who nabbed the last first-place vote, finished in third place with 96 points.
Brown becomes the first player in league history to garner this honor three-straight seasons. The senior quarterback, who has already been named to the Walter Payton Award preseason watch list and a Sports Network preseason All-America second-team honoree this summer, has finished as the league's Offensive Player of the Year the past two seasons.
Brown was a dominant force at both the conference and national level in 2010. The quarterback led the country with a program and league record 346.36 yards of total offense per game.
During his first full-time year under center, the quarterback completed 223-of-351 passing attempts and threw for 2,956 yards and 23 touchdowns. He ranked No. 7 nationally with a 149.6 passer efficiency rating and No. 8 in passing yards per game (268.73).
Brown also led the Flames rushing efforts, carrying the ball 160 times for a career-best 854 yards, while scoring nine times on the ground. In total, he finished the year ranked No. 4 in the country in points responsible for (17.45 per game), as Brown factored in on 32 of the team's 49 total touchdowns during Liberty's Big South championship season.
Brown was one of seven Liberty players honored on the day, as the Flames led all Big South programs with seven preseason all-conference selections.
Stony Brook and Gardner-Webb followed closely behind Liberty with a half dozen preseason honorees, while Coastal Carolina had four players named to the list. Rounding out the 29-player listing were Charleston Southern, Presbyterian College and VMI, each taking home two preseason all-conference selections.
Joining Brown on the preseason all-conference list for Liberty was Chris Summers (wide receiver), Malcolm Boyd (offensive line), Asa Chapman (defensive line), Matt Bevins (kicker), Mike Larsson (punter) and B.J. Hayes (punt return specialist).
