Two days away from Liberty's first home meet of the 2011 outdoor track & field season, Nick Pierce caught up with Liberty senior distance standout Dacia Bushman and head coach Brant Tolsma.

Bushman has enjoyed a stellar senior year. She placed third at the Big South Cross Country Championship and won the 5K at the Big South Indoor Track & Field Championship.

Most recently, the Hawkeye State native sped to a 35:15.84 clocking in the 10K, Friday at the Raleigh Relays. The effort cut nearly a minute and a half off of Bushman's previous best and briefly ranked No. 1 nationally among NCAA Division I runners.

Tolsma recapped Sam Chelanga's performance from the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championship, as well as Liberty's first three meets of the 2011 outdoor campaign.

The Flames have already broken three school records this year, including the men's javelin (Elliot Galeone), women's triple jump (Mia Aghaji) and women's shuttle hurdles (Olivia Charnuski, Krystle Matthews, Rachel Houseknecht and Christina Mitchell).

The Liberty Collegiate Invitational will feature competitors from more than 30 different colleges, Friday and Saturday at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex. Action gets underway Friday at 1 p.m., with the decathlon 100-meter dash and women's hammer.
