Rhode Island Rallies, Tops Liberty, 7-3, in 8 Innings
Liberty took a 3-0 lead into the fourth inning, Friday against Rhode Island before the Rams rallied, downing the Lady Flames, 7-3, in eight innings at Kamphuis Field at Liberty Softball Stadium.
The Rams improve to 7-8, going 2-1 during three games today at the Liberty Softball Classic. Liberty (10-12) split two games today, and carries a 2-1 tournament record into tomorrow's action.
Becca Rogers (5-3) earned her second victory of the day, allowing three hits in five relief innings, striking out five and walking one. Caitlin Kennedy yielded three runs, one earned on six hits in three innings of work.
Chandler Ball (2-3) gave up four runs, one earned on three hits, with three strikeouts and four walks in 3 2/3 innings of relief. Starter Chase Cassady allowed three runs, one earned on four hits in 4 1/3 innings, striking out two and walking three.
Marylynn Muldowney went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Rams, while Ali Summers batted 2-for-2 with two doubles. Jenna Cubello scored twice.
Cassady worked through trouble in the first inning, as Summers led off with a double. Rhode Island's rally derailed when Kylie Shivery lined into an inning-ending double play.
Liberty went ahead during its first time up, loading the bases with one out. After two outs, Zavodny bounced a two-run single into right field. See grounded out, ending the inning.
The Lady Flames added to their advantage in the second. Reynolds hit a leadoff single, and pinch runner Blair Lawrence stole second. Taylor later plated Lawrence with a single, making it 3-0 Liberty.
The hosts put runners on second and third during the third stanza, on singles by McCoy and See. Kennedy got out of the jam when Reynolds lined out to third base.
Rhode Island entered the scoring column with a fourth-inning tally. Cubello drew a leadoff walk, and then scored from first when Shivery's single got past Liberty's center fielder. Cassady got the next three batter out, fanning Madi Housel for the final out.
The Rams tied the game up in the top of the fifth. With runners on second and third and one out, Julich hit a sacrifice fly to right off of reliever Ball. Summers then scored when Cubello reached on a fielding error, knotting the score at 3-all. Ball fanned Shivery, ending the rally.
During the sixth inning, Rhode Island's Taylor Archer drew a leadoff walk. Pinch runner Olivia Hendricks reached third with two outs on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. Hendricks was then picked off of third base.
Liberty's Reynolds drew a leadoff walk in the sixth, but three groundouts ensued, sending the game into the seventh tied at 3-3.
A two-out walk to Summers gave the Rams life in the seventh, and Julich followed with a double. However, Ball fanned Cubello, escaping the threat.
Liberty went in order during the seventh, sending the game to extra innings.
With the International tie-breaker in effect, Cubello was placed on second. After a popout, Rhode Island scored four runs on two hits, taking advantage of a Liberty error to gain a 7-3 advantage.
Zavodny led off Liberty's last at bat with a bunt single. A sacrifice bunt by Deidra See put runners at second and third. Rogers then fanned Jessica Cicerchia and Taylor Mabry to cap the Rams' comeback victory.
The Lady Flames finish up their participation in the Liberty Softball Classic with a pair of games tomorrow. Liberty meets Sacred Heart at 5 p.m., before taking on La Salle in a 7 p.m. matchup.
