Lady Flames Blank North Texas 1-0 to Begin Getterman Classic
Liberty opened up the 2016 Getterman Classic with a 1-0, shutout victory over North Texas, Friday at Baylor's Getterman Stadium.
The Lady Flames improve to 3-4 on the season with the win, their second shutout victory of the campaign. North Texas falls to 3-4 after splitting two games on day one at the Getterman Classic.
Chase Cassady (2-2) earned the win, allowing just three hits while striking out four and walking three. Chandler Ball came on with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, recording the save while retiring the only batter she faced.
Stacey Underwood (1-3) allowed one run on three hits, with three strikeouts and two walks in six innings pitched. Lauren Craine pitched one inning of hitless relief.
Rhylie Makawe went 1-for-3 with a double for the Mean Green, while Kelli Schkade and Kay Kay Hatter had one hit each.
Cassady worked through a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the first. With two on and one out, she walked Danielle Gregory to fill the bases. The freshman right-hander then escaped the inning by getting the next two batters to fly out.
Underwood retired the first 10 Lady Flames batters she faced, before Zavodny hit a one-out single in the fourth. Zavodny advanced to third on a groundout, but was left there when Jaclyn Amader grounded to short.
North Texas managed just one hit through the first four innings, leaving the game scoreless.
The Lady Flames manufactured a run in the top of the fifth to take the lead, 1-0. Kassidy McCoy walked, and pinch runner Lawrence stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. See then plated Lawrence with an RBI single. Underwood got out of the inning with a double play and a strikeout.
The Mean Green threatened to tie the game in the sixth, with Makawe hitting a leadoff double. She went to third on a sacrifice bunt. However, she was cut down at the plate by Robertson on a grounder by Makenzi Dawson. Cassady then fanned Lauren Miller for the third out.
Underwood walked Amader to start the seventh. Craine then entered the circle in relief of Underwood. After Amader was caught stealing, Craine retired the next two Lady Flames, bringing the Mean Green to the plate one final time.
During the top of the seventh, Casady Webb drew a leadoff walk. A sacrifice sent her to second. After a popout, Ball came on to relieve Cassady, sealing the victory when Schkade fouled out.
Liberty will next take on the host team, the No. 21/21 Baylor Bears, at 6:30 p.m. ET, to finish day one at the Getterman Classic. It will be Liberty's third game against a nationally ranked opponent this season.
