Flames Surge Past Spartans
The Liberty men's tennis squad claimed the second contest of Saturday's doubleheader to finish the evening 2-0. Liberty defeated Norfolk State in the second contest of the evening, 6-1, at the Sports Racket.
With the win, Liberty improves to an even 3-3 on the campaign. The Spartans remain winless dropping to 0-3 on the season.
For the second time on Saturday, the Flames claimed the doubles point including a win by forfeit from the No. 3 doubles position. The doubles tandem of David Bush and Diego Castano provided the Flames with the early 1-0 advantage after defeating Antonio Pejic and Fatehdeep Singh by a score of 6-2 from the No. 2 doubles slot.
Liberty rattled off three consecutive singles wins to take the 4-0 lead, clinching the match over Norfolk State. The first victory came in the No. 6 singles spot when Jason Burgess won by forfeit.
The Flames quickly captured the 3-0 advantage when Matheson defeated Fernandez in straight sets to remain undefeated in singles play. The New Zealand native bested Fernandez 6-0 and then cruised to a 6-3 victory in the second frame.
The match was clinched when freshman Eddie Gutierrez defeated Singh in straight sets from the No. 5 singles position. The Mexico native bested Singh 6-4 in the first set and then downed the India native 6-2 in the second to seal the match for Liberty.
With the match clinched, the Flames claimed two of the final three singles matches. Alex Poynter and Samaai won their matches in three sets, respectively. Meanwhile, the lone Spartans victory came from the No. 3 spot with Pejic besting Diego Castano, 7-5, 6-4.
The Flames take to the road on Friday for a three-match tournament in Tallahassee, Fla. Liberty will begin the tournament against Florida A&M on Friday at 2:30 p.m., and conclude the events on Feb. 21 against The Citadel at 9 a.m.
