Lady Flames Pull Away Late, Down Morgan State, 11-1
Liberty held Morgan State to four hits, and exploded for eight runs during the seventh inning, cruising to an 11-1 win over the Bears, Saturday at the National Training Center.
The Lady Flames (1-3) picked up their first win of the season, improving to 1-2 at the Dot Richardson Invitational. Liberty recorded a season-high 14 hits and four stolen bases as a team. Morgan State falls to 0-3 on the campaign.
Chase Cassady (1-1) picked up her first career win, striking out a season-high nine batters while walking three and allowing one run on four hits.
MSU's Amy Begg (0-1) drew the loss, yielding seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits, fanning three and walking four. Erica Hawkins allowed four runs, two earned on four hits in one inning of relief.
Tori Zavodny went 3-for-5 with a triple and one RBI, while Sarah Robertson scored two runs and had two RBI. Deidra See and Rylee Reynolds both batted 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while Jaclyn Amader and Kaitlin McFarland added two hits apiece and Alexia Taylor scored twice.
For Morgan State, Audrianna Alvarez batted 2-for-3, while Kate Vosper went 1-for-2 with one RBI.
Morgan State loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the first, and scored when Cassady hit Vosper with a pitch. Cassady then struck out the side.
Cassady sat down nine straight Bears batters, spanning the first through fourth innings. During that time, she struck out five.
The Lady Flames quickly went ahead in the third, as Taylor hit a leadoff single and Zavodny followed by tripling to center for a 2-1 lead. Begg escaped further damage, getting the last three outs via strikeout, pickoff and groundout.
Morgan State's Danielle PItpit walked with one out in the bottom of the fourth, but pinch runner Giselle Alvarez was caught stealing for the third out.
A quick two-out rally produced Liberty's third run, in the fifth. Robertson drew a walk, and stole second. Amader then plated Robertson with an RBI single, boosting the lead to 3-1.
Alvarez singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth, and a sacrifice bunt sent her to second. She got no further, as two flyouts ensued.
After a scoreless sixth inning, Liberty broke the game wide open with an eight-run seventh inning. During the inning, the Lady Flames registered six hits, while benefitting from two Morgan State errors. With the bases loaded, Robertson hit a two-run single to right. Hawkins then entered the circle in relief of Begg. McCoy later hit an RBI groundout, followed by a two-RBI double by See. Reynolds made it 9-1 with an RBI single to left, and the final two runs scored on a Bears error.
Alvarez started a Morgan State rally with a single in the bottom of the seventh, but a 4-6-3 double play brought the game to an end.
The Lady Flames will face Stetson at 6:30 p.m. to finish their time at the Dot Richardson Invitational.
