Liberty Blanked by Bethune-Cookman, 8-0
Bethune-Cookman opened the game with a pair of three-run innings, downing the Liberty Lady Flames, 8-0 in five innings, Friday at the National Training Center.
The Wildcats (2-0) opened their season with a pair of run-rule victories today, defeating both Morgan State and Liberty. The Lady Flames fall to 0-3 after two setbacks on day one at the Dot Richardson Invitational.
Deidra Genera (2-0) tossed a complete-game, five-hit shutout, striking out eight and walking one.
Chandler Ball (0-1) lasted four and one-thirds innings, yielding eight runs, six earned, on six hits while fanning six and walking four.
The Lady Flames tallied five hits, but also recorded five errors, while the Wildcats had six hits, one error and a season-high eight stolen bases.
Iesha Waters went 2-for-3 with a double, two stolen bases, three RBI and two runs scored, while Annie Bakenhus batted 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Mariah Davis scored two runs.
Alexia Taylor led the Lady Flames with two hits in three trips to the plate, while Tori Zavodny, Kassidy McCoy and Deidra See had one hit each. Zavodny stole two bases, giving her three steals on the day.
Bethune-Cookman scored three runs during its first time at bat, recording two hits and stealing three bases during the frame while also benefitting from one Liberty error. The first four Wildcats batters all reached base, before Ball retired the next three in order.
McCoy led off the second with a single, before Genera struck out the next two Lady Flames. Reynolds was robbed of a hit by a diving Davis in center for the third out.
The Wildcats doubled their led to 6-0 with a three-run second, adding four hits. With two on and two out, Davis doubled to center, plating two. Brianna Sanders then hit an RBI single to score Davis. A Bryanna Campos groundout ended the inning.
The Lady Flames threatened in the third, with Taylor singling and Robertson reaching on an error with two outs. Genera got Amader to ground out, ending the rally.
Ball worked around three errors over the third and fourth innings, keeping the Wildcats off the board both times.
The first two Lady Flames reached in the fourth inning, with McCoy walking and See hitting a single. Genera then got the next three outs, two via strikeout.
An error with one out in the bottom of the fifth opened the door for the Wildcats, who scored twice during the inning to win by the run rule, 8-0.
Liberty returns to the National Training Center for a pair of games tomorrow. The Lady Flames take on Morgan State at 1:30 p.m. before wrapping up their time at the Dot Richardson Invitational with a 6:30 p.m. matchup against Stetson.
