Lady Flames Suffer Third Consecutive Setback
The Liberty Lady Flames tennis squad fell for the third consecutive contest, this time against Syracuse in Syracuse, N.Y., by a score of 6-1. The loss drops Liberty to 1-3 on the season while the Orange improve to 2-0 on the campaign.
Liberty claimed the doubles point despite falling in the first doubles match. Anna Dollar and Maria Khval suffered a 6-3 setback to begin doubles competition. However, it was the Lady Flames on top of the doubles point after rallying to claim the 1-0 advantage. Rebekah Anderson and Aleksandra Panchenko knotted the doubles advantage point in the No. 3 doubles slot, winning 7-5 over Nicole Mitchell/Maria Tritou. Evangeline Crist and Valerie Thong came from behind in the No. 1 doubles slot to defeat Valeria Salazar and Anna Shkudun, 7-6(2).
The Lady Flames could not pull out a singles win, losing in straight-sets in each of the six matches. Syracuse won each singles competition to claim the match, 6-1.
"Although we aren't getting the wins we'd like to in the beginning of the season, our schedule is doing exactly what it's supposed to do," stated head coach Jeff Maren. "Our schedule is toughening us up, making us stronger mentally, and preparing us for the second half of the season. We are making improvements daily, and can't wait to continue our growth next week in practice."
The Lady Flames return to action next Saturday against Elon in Elon, N.C. The contest is slated to begin at noon and will conclude the Lady Flames' four-game road swing.
