For the 15th time in the last 18 seasons, Liberty has earned the No. 1 seed for the 2015 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Women's Basketball Championship. The Lady Flames will play the winner of Tuesday's game between No. 8 seed UNC Asheville and No. 9 seed Coastal Carolina in the quarterfinal round, Thursday at noon inside The HTC Center in Conway, S.C.
Liberty, which is 23-6 overall, shattered the previous record for conference victories with a 19-1 Big South mark on the way to its 15th Big South regular-season title. The Lady Flames have won the Big South Championship title 13 of the 14 previous times they have been seeded first.
Liberty enters the tournament on a tear, having won 11 consecutive games and 17 of its last 18 outings. The Lady Flames have recorded their eighth straight 20-win season.
If the Lady Flames win on Thursday, they would face either No. 4 seed Winthrop or No. 5 seed Campbell in the semifinals Saturday at 6 p.m. The championship game is slated for next Sunday at 5 p.m.
For the third consecutive season, the entire tournament will be contested inside Coastal Carolina's The HTC Center, in conjunction with the Big South Men's Basketball Championship.
Radford and High Point tied for second place in the conference standings at 14-6, with the Highlanders winning the tiebreaker for the No. 2 seed.
Similarly, defending tournament champion Winthrop and Campbell shared fourth place at 13-7. The Eagles were the lone Big South team to defeat Liberty this season, so they earned the No. 4 seed over the Lady Camels.
Speaking of the first round, Presbyterian (No. 6 seed, 10-10), Gardner-Webb (No. 7, 9-11) and UNC Asheville (No. 8, 7-13) will each be the higher-seeded team in their respective contests on Tuesday.
Tournament host Coastal Carolina (No. 9, 6-14), Longwood (No. 10, 4-16) and Charleston Southern (No. 11, 1-19) round out the seeding.
Liberty fans will have several ways to keep up with the action if they are unable to make it to The HTC Center. The quarterfinals, semifinals and championship game will all be aired on ESPN3.
Additionally, Jamie Hall will broadcast each of Liberty's games on 90.9 FM "The Light." The radio call will also be streamed on LibertyFlames.com.
