ITA National and Regional Rankings

Liberty Lady Flames tennis program has been on the rise as of late, as was evidenced by the announcing of the first ITA national and regional rankings this afternoon. Emily Groeneveld and Valerie Thong were tabbed as the No. 57 national doubles tandem and No. 7 in the Atlantic Region. No Liberty women's duo had ever been ranked this high entering the season. Groeneveld and Thong are the only Big South duo to be named in the ITA Top 60 and Atlantic Region Top 10.

"This is a great boost to our team as we prepare for the spring season, but I truly believe that it is just the beginning of our accomplishments this year," stated Liberty Women's Tennis Head Coach Jeff Maren. "These types of rankings are proof that hard work pays off."

Groeneveld, a sophomore transfer from East Carolina, has proven what she can do this past fall, claiming two doubles flights including one with Thong at the Hokie Fall Invite. Groeneveld also qualified for the main draw at the ITA Regional tournament and advanced all the way to the ITA Regional doubles quarterfinals.

Thong, a junior from Alhambra, Calif., has had a strong start to the 2014-15 season. Thong has claimed two doubles flights, one at the Elon Invitational as well as one with Groeneveld at the Hokie Fall Invite. Not only has she competed sufficiently in doubles, Thong also shared the singles flight championship with teammate Brittany Yang while at the Elon Invitational.

The doubles tandem looks to guide the Lady Flames to their fifth consecutive double-digit wins season, with hopes of hoisting the Big South trophy this April.
