2015 Liberty Softball Schedule
A contest at defending national champion Florida, along with the opening of the brand-new Liberty Softball Stadium, highlight Liberty's 2015 softball schedule, released today by second-year head coach Dot Richardson and her staff.
Liberty will face eight opponents this season who qualified for the 2014 NCAA Division I Softball Championship, including Regional finalists South Alabama and UCF and national champion Florida. The Lady Flames will meet two teams (No. 1 Florida, No. 23 South Alabama) which appeared in the final 2014 national rankings. Of Liberty's opponents, eight finished in the top 50 in RPI last season.
The Lady Flames open their new, 1,000-seat Liberty Softball Stadium, on March 19 against Rider. Liberty softball fans will get to see their Lady Flames compete in 23 games at the brand-new, state-of-the art facility, including home doubleheaders against Commonwealth ACC opponents Virginia Tech and Virginia.
Liberty begins the season at the Sand Dollar Classic in Gulf Shores, Ala., from Feb. 6-8. The Lady Flames' season opener is against 2014 NCAA Regional finalist South Alabama, a team which finished last season ranked No. 23. Liberty will also face Lamar, Houston Baptist, and NCAA qualifier Houston while in Gulf Shores, Ala.
The team will then play in Florida on back-to-back weekends, beginning with the Dot Richardson Invitational, from Feb. 13-15 in Clermont Florida. Liberty will face Cleveland State, Arkansas of the SEC, 2014 NCAA Regional finalist UCF, Middle Tennessee and UMass Lowell.
The Lady Flames compete in a tournament hosted by Florida, Feb. 20 and 21. After facing Illinois State, Liberty will take on the defending national champion, Florida. Last season, the Lady Flames met 2013 national champion Oklahoma. Liberty will also face Mercer and NCAA qualifier Kansas from the Big 12 while in Gainesville, Fla.
A midweek game at 2014 NCAA tournament participant South Carolina on March 5 opens a Spring Break trip through South Carolina. The Lady Flames then play at the Holy City Showdown in Charleston, S.C., March 6-8. Liberty opens the invitational against NCAA qualifier Dartmouth, while also taking on Jacksonville, South Carolina State and Loyola Chicago.
Liberty will play at South Carolina State, March 11, before opening conference play March 13-14 at Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C.
The Lady Flames play their first-ever home game at Liberty Softball Stadium on March 19 at 7 p.m. against Rider, opening their home invitational. There, Liberty will have contests against Saint Francis (Pa.), Princeton, Quinnipiac and Toledo.
The team returns to the road, competing in a twin bill at Hampton on March 24, and then playing a weekend Big South series at Campbell. The Camels will host the 2015 Big South Softball Championship at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
Liberty plays nine straight games, all conference contests, inside Liberty Softball Stadium. The Lady Flames will host Longwood (March 31-April 1), Presbyterian (April 3-4) and Radford (7-8), all in a row.
A trip to 2014 Big South tournament champion Charleston Southern, April 11-12, serves as the only three road contests in a 21-game span.
The Lady Flames begin a nine-game homestand with an April 14 doubleheader against Virginia Tech.
