Standout Liberty football players Mitch Hanson and Chima Uzowihe have been honored for their efforts in the classroom, as the pair was been named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District III team, earlier today.

The team, organized by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), annually recognized the top student-athletes in the country.

With their selection to the all-district team, Hanson and Uzowihe are now eligible for the Capital One Academic All-America ® team, which will be announced in early December.

Hanson is making his second consecutive appearance on the Capital One Academic All-District III team. The senior from Blue Ridge, Va., finished his undergraduate degree in government with a 3.92 GPA and currently has a perfect 4.00 graduate GPA in human services/counseling.

Hanson has started the last 32 games of his career and 35 total during his last four seasons of play. Liberty's starting right guard earned second team Big South All-Conference and VaSID All-State honors in 2013.

Liberty's offensive line has helped protect quarterback Josh Woodrum in 2014, as Liberty ranks No. 6 in the country in fewest sacks allowed (7/0.78 per game). The Flames have also rushed for 22 touchdowns during the first nine games of season.

Uzowihe is making his first appearance on the Capital One Academic All-District III team with a 3.30 GPA as a biology major.

The junior is Liberty's most experienced defensive lineman, having started the last 21 games and 29 total during his three-year career with the Flames.

The native of Houston, Texas, has 29 stops on the season, including a team-best 8.0 tackles for a loss and 6.0 sacks. Individually, he was named the Big South Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 26, while the Flames' entire defensive line took home the same weekly honor following Liberty's shutout win at Norfolk State.

Earlier this season, the junior moved into Liberty's top five career sacks listing, as he has recorded 15 sacks for his career.

Hanson, Uzowihe and the rest of the Flames welcome Big South newcomer Monmouth to Williams Stadium this Saturday. Kickoff for the Military Appreciation game is set for 3:30 p.m.
