Game On 2014 Opponent Preview: Gardner-Webb
LFSN's Game On continues its weekly opponent preview series with Nick Pierce by taking a look at the Runnin' Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb, Liberty's first Big South foe of the season.
Gardner-Webb has won four of its last five games, including a 47-41 double overtime victory at VMI last weekend in its final tune-up before Big South play.
The Runnin' Bulldogs are in their second season under head coach Carroll McCray, a 1983 graduate of Gardner-Webb. McCray led his program to a 7-5 record last year, marking Gardner-Webb's most wins since 2003.
Gardner-Webb is led on both sides of the football by two of the nation's premier players. Wide receiver Kenny Cook, who is on the Walter Payton Award watch list, has caught two game-winning touchdowns in 2014. He is coming off a career game at VMI where he finished the contest with 12 receptions for 251 yards.
Nose guard O.J. Mau is on the Buck Buchanan Award watch list and he was a preseason FCS All-American selection. The 2013 All-American has recorded 38 tackles in 2014, including 16 solo stops, to go along with 8.0 tackles for a loss and 2.0 sacks.
Game On, a 30-minute daily sports talk show produced by Liberty Flames Sports Network (LFSN), airs Monday through Friday on various LFSN affiliates across the country and features regular coverage of Liberty football throughout the 2014 season. LFSN is a professional network that reaches more than 85 million homes across the U.S. and other areas of the world.
