LFSN Weekend Recap: Big South Preview
With Liberty coming off its annual bye week, Alan York and Nick Pierce use their weekly Monday recap segment to look at how Liberty's Big South opponents have fared in 2014.
The Big South had its most successful non-conference schedule since the league started playing football in 2002. The Big South posted a 21-5 record in non-conference games against FCS opponents, surpassing last year's league record of 16-9.
Liberty closed out its non-conference schedule with a 55-48 overtime victory against Appalachian State, marking the league's fourth victory all-time over an FBS opponent. One of the other four FBS wins was the Flames' win at Ball State in 2010.
On Sept. 22, the Big South achieved another league first when the Big South had three different teams in the FCS top 25 polls at the same time (No. 3/3 Coastal Carolina, No. 22/23 Liberty and No. RV/25 Charleston Southern – Sports Network/FCS Coach polls).
Finally, the Big South comes into this week ranked as the No. 2 conference in the Gridiron Power Index. The Big South, who trailed only the Missouri Valley Football Conference in the listing, ranked ahead of traditional FCS powerhouse conferences like the Big Sky Conference (No. 3), Colonial Athletic Association (No. 4) and the Southern Conference (No. 7).
Liberty opens up Big South play against Gardner-Webb this weekend, followed by home games against Monmouth (Nov. 8) and Charleston Southern (Nov. 15). The Flames' two road conference games are against Presbyterian (Nov. 1) and Coastal Carolina (Nov. 22).
