Koech Tabbed BSC Runner of the Week
After recording his second top-five finish in his first three collegiate races, Liberty freshman Titus Koech is this week's Big South Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week.
Koech is the first Liberty freshman to win the Big South Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week honor since fellow Eldoret, Kenya native Ngetich Kipchirchir did so on Sept. 29, 2012.
Koech posted the best finish of any Big South men's runner at Saturday's Greater Louisville Classic, crossing the line fifth of 356 entrants in the men's 8K blue race. He clocked a time of 24:58.88, breaking the 25:00 barrier for the first time in his young career. Koech's performance helped the Liberty men's squad place third overall as a team.
Koech has served as the Flames' No. 1 runner in two of his first three collegiate races. He also paced Liberty's pack at the Gardner-Webb XC Invitational on Sept. 13, 2014, where Koech came in third overall in his Flames debut.
The Liberty men's and women's cross country squads will take this weekend off from competition before returning to action on Oct. 18 at the ISU Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind. The day's first race is set for an 11 a.m. start at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, site of the 2014 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships.
