Liberty provided its returning alumni during Homecoming weekend with a thrilling game, but eventually suffered a 46-39 double overtime setback to No. 20/21 Richmond on Saturday at Williams Stadium.

The game was played in front of a stadium-record 20,838 fans, shattering the previous Williams Stadium record by more than 1,500 (previous record was 19,314 set against Savannah State on Oct. 2, 2010, when the renovated stadium was reopened).

The Flames rallied in the game and forced overtime when junior kicker John Lunsford connected on a school and Big South record 60-yard field goal as time expired in regulation.

However, for the second Homecoming game in a row, Liberty fell in double overtime to a nationally ranked opponent (last year, Liberty lost to No. 6/4 Coastal Carolina, 55-52, in double overtime).

Richmond scored a touchdown on both of its overtime possessions and the Spiders sealed the road victory when Omar Howard intercepted a Josh Woodrum pass on the game's final play.
