Radford Defeats Liberty, 2-0

On a night when shot attempts were at premium, the host Radford Highlanders downed the Liberty Flames, 2-0, in a defensive contest, Saturday night in a Big South Conference match at Cupp Stadium.

Radford netted a goal in each half en route to its fourth consecutive win. The Highlanders and Flames combined for 11 shot attempts on the evening. Host Radford held a 9-2 advantage in shots during the contest.

Liberty drops to 5-3-1 overall and 0-2 in Big South play. Radford moves to 6-2-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

At 7:15, the Highlanders struck for a 1-0 advantage. Dario Redondo took a pass straight on goal and scored his first goal of the year from 15 yards out.

The marker was the last shot attempt of the half as the final 37:45 did not see either side attempting a shot.

Radford extended its advantage, early in the second half. At 58:38, Highlander Jamie Summers jumped in front of a clearing attempt and scored from 25 yards. His second goal of the year pushed the Radford edge to 2-0.

Liberty was able to get a shot opportunity during the 72nd minute. Midfielder Khalil Karl pushed a direct kick wide.

Later in the half, Brady Mazzei had a shot blocked in front of the goal by a Radford defender during 88th minute.

Liberty goalkeeper Scott Sutarik made three saves in the contest.  Radford goalkeeper Aitor Pouseu Blanco did not record a save in recording his Big South-leading fifth shutout of the year.

Radford held the advantage in corner kicks, 6-3.

After two matches away from home to start Big South Conference play, the Flames return to Osborne Stadium to host the High Point Panthers, Tuesday. Match time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
