Karle Posts Top 10 Finish at Hagan Stone Classic
Liberty freshman Alyssa Karle's 10th-place finish paced four Lady Flames in the top 17 of the women's 5K at Saturday morning's Hagan Stone Classic. As a result, Liberty's partial women's squad placed third in the team standings.
With seven of their teammates racing at the Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday, the Lady Flames totaled 79 points for third place out of 14 teams at Hagan Stone Park. Liberty finished with the same score as Roanoke College, but the Maroons took the tiebreaker for second place. VCU ran away with the women's team title, finishing with just 17 points.
Karle clocked a season-best 5K time of 20:00.61 to place 10th in the field of 135 women's competitors. Three teammates followed her across the finish line within the next 22 seconds, including redshirt freshman Hannah Scherlacher (12th place, 20:09.39), senior Stephanie Buda (16th place, 20:19.49) and senior Mary Cate Cooper (17th place, 20:22.87).
Redshirt sophomore Kaitlyn Hutchins was the Lady Flames' fifth and final scorer, running a personal-best time of 20:53.18 for 31st place. Freshman Heather Wyatt came in 46th in 21:18.46, while freshman Crystal Grierson was 58th in 21:45.05 during her collegiate cross country debut.
Liberty graduate assistant Jaiden Brandt was the overall champion in the men's 8K race Saturday morning, with his time of 25:17.30 putting him nearly 30 seconds clear of runner-up Harrison Toney from Roanoke College. Brandt is in his first year with the Flames' track & field/cross country staff after graduating from Georgia Regents University in 2014.
Liberty will take a weekend off from competition before returning to action at the ISU Pre-National Invitational on Oct. 18 in Terre Haute, Ind. The first race of the day will begin at 11 a.m. at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, the site of the 2014 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships.
