Liberty Completes First Round of Colorado Invitational
The Liberty Lady Flames tennis squad played four doubles matches and four singles matches in the first round of the Colorado Invitational, Thursday afternoon. Liberty is making its first ever appearance in the Colorado Invitational.
In their four double matches today, the Lady Flames finished 2-2 with by the team of Belen Rivera/Brittany Yang and Maria Khval/Nicola Wellman picking up victories. The duo of Rivera/Yang defeated Utah's Sarah Richter/Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa, 6-4. Khval/Wellman took care of business against Southern Illinois's Hannah Wich/Yana Golovkina by a score of 6-1. The two teams compete at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow in the second round of the doubles tournament.
Wellman and Rivera picked up the two singles wins for the Lady Flames on the day. Wellman defeated the Southern Ilinois's Ariadna Cairo Baza in straight sets 7-6(1), 6-2. Rivera picked up the second singles win for Liberty by defeating New Mexico's Sharon Coone in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
"Today was all about improving our doubles," Liberty Women's Tennis Head Coach Jeff Maren. "Our competition forced us to step up our games and we were able to do that at times. We still have a few things to improve, and will emphasize those areas over the next few days."
Liberty continues play tomorrow at the Colorado Invitational with doubles competition at 8:30, followed by the second round of singles competition.
