Golf Opens Fall Schedule at Inverness Intercollegiate
The Liberty men's golf team opens its 2014-15 season at a familiar site when the Flames travel to Toledo, Ohio, next week to participate in the 10th annual Inverness Intercollegiate.
The Flames, who finished last year ranked No. 35 in the final Golfstat rankings and No. 38 in the last Golfweek listing, played in the tournament in 2011 and 2012.
In 2011, Liberty placed second out of 11 teams in a event that was shortened to 18 holes due to inclement weather. In 2012, Liberty finished fifth out of 10 teams.
The tournament is played at the renowned Inverness Club (par 71, 7,300 yards), which was founded in 1903 and hosted the 2009 NCAA Men's Golf National Championship. The course has also hosted four U.S. Opens (1920, 1931, 1957 and 1979), two PGA Championships (1986 and 1993) and two U.S. Senior Opens (2003 and 2011).
Although the tournament may be familiar to the program, it will be new to four out of five of Liberty Head Golf Coach Jeff Thomas' starters during the two-day, 54-hole event.
Liberty graduated four seniors from last year's team. The group helped the Flames win three Big South titles during their four years at Liberty and make four consecutive NCAA Regional appearances.
The lone player returning from last year's nationally ranked program is Mathieu Fenasse, who in the only senior on this year's roster.
Fenasse ranked third on Liberty's roster in 2013-14 with a 73.18 stroke average and posted four top 10 finishes in 11 team events.
Fenasse was on Liberty's traveling roster the last two times the Flames visited the Toledo hosted event. He finished tied for 17th place in 2012 with an 8-over par 221 (73-71-77) and his only round in 2011 was an 8-over par 79.
The remaining four starters for the Flames next week will be sophomore Hutson Chandler and freshman Adam Eineving, Austin Inman and Isaiah Logue. All four players will be playing in their first collegiate event.
Logue gained some valuable experience this summer when the Fairfield, Pa., native advanced to the Round of 32 of the 2014 U.S. Amateur.
The 12-team field includes several programs that posted top 50 final rankings in 2013-14. Along with the Flames (No. 35), this year's Inverness field includes No. 19 UAB, No. 30 Mercer, No. 32 South Florida and No. 39 Kent State.
The tournament will feature 36 holes of stroke play on Monday, followed a closing round of 18 holes on Tuesday. Live stats will be provide for the entire 54-hole event by Birdiefire.com.
