Shipe, Weidner Earn Big South Weekly Honors
Liberty volleyball senior libero Gabrielle Shipe and freshman right-side attacker Hannah Weidner have been honored by the Big South Conference with weekly awards, as announced on Monday. Shipe and Weidner helped the Lady Flames go 4-1 this past week, including a tournament title at the Brown Invitational.
Shipe was named the Big South Defensive Player of the Week, while Weidner was tabbed Big South Freshman of the Week for the second week in a row. Shipe, a native of Orlando, Fla., earns the fourth Defensive Player of the Week honor of her career, and her first since Nov. 12, 2012.
Weidner, hailing from Shorewood, Minn., continues to shine during her first season as a Lady Flame. She averaged 3.00 kills per set while hitting .271 and averaging 0.60 blocks per set during five matches last week.
She recorded a match-high 16 kills and tied her career high with five block assists during a 3-1 win at Georgetown on Tuesday. After recording 12 kills against Central Connecticut, she hit .320 with 10 kills in a 3-1 win over Brown on Friday. Weidner then scored 10 kills at a .450 pace versus UMass-Lowell, before recording 12 kills at .407 in Liberty's tournament finale against Fairfield.
Overall, Weidner has reached double-figures in kills in seven straight matches, and in 12 out of Liberty's first 13 matches this season. She ranks fifth in the Big South with 3.40 kills per set and is sixth with a .293 hitting percentage.
Shipe averaged 4.50 digs per set and 0.45 aces per set during Liberty's 4-1 week. She was named to the Brown Invitational All-Tournament team, averaging 4.62 digs per set and 0.44 aces per set during four matches at Brown.
The senior libero opened the week with 16 digs and two aces at Georgetown. She then recorded her second 20-dig match of the season, collecting a match-high 21 digs versus Central Connecticut. Shipe totaled a match-high 19 digs to go with two aces, as Liberty downed tournament host Brown, 3-1. She led Liberty with 15 digs and a season-high three aces during a 3-1 victory over UMass-Lowell on Saturday, and paced all players with 19 digs when Liberty swept Fairfield to end the tournament.
For the season, Shipe leads the Lady Flames and ranks sixth in the Big South with 4.32 digs per set. She has also vaulted up the Liberty all-time digs list, reaching eighth overall with 1,382 career digs.
The Lady Flames (9-4) will travel to Nashville this week, to compete at the Bruin Classic, hosted by Belmont on Friday and Saturday. Liberty opens the tournament with a 5 p.m. match against Northern Kentucky on Friday. The Lady Flames will then face Wright State and Belmont, Saturday.
