Lady Flames Conclude Elon Invite with Four Flight Titles
The Liberty Lady Flames women's tennis team concluded play in the Elon Invitational on Sunday. The Lady Flames were able to win four of the seven finals that they competed in, including two doubles finals.
Liberty was able to produce good results against players from nationally ranked programs like Wake Forest, Elon and Furman.
Liberty's first singles win came in the B-1 flight as Valerie Thong and Brittany Yang were scheduled to face each other. However, Liberty Head Coach Jeff Maren opted to not have the teammates square off, resulting in a Liberty singles win.
The second singles win for the Lady Flames came in the next flight where Lauren Mabe was able to take care of Radford's Taylor Fay in straight sets (6-0, 6-4).
Additionally, Mariely Massey took third place in the A-1 flight, defeating USC Upstate's Isabel von Stryk (6-1, 6-4).
Belen Rivera and sophomore transfer Emily Groeneveld combined for the first doubles win as they were able to defeat North Carolina Central's team of Ekaterina Nekrasova and Rebecca Wood by a score of 8-6 in the A-2 doubles final.
Freshman Evangeline Crist teamed up with Valerie Thong to down Elon's Taylor Casey and Olivia Lucas with ease by a score of 8-0 in the B-1 doubles finals.
"I am so proud of our girls," said Maren after his team posted a 31-9 overall record during the weekend event. "They fought hard all weekend and produced very good results. This tournament is a positive step in the right direction."
The Lady Flames return to action Sept. 25 when they travel to Boulder, Colo., to take part in the Colorado Invitational.
