The Flames opened the 2014 season on the road for the fourth year in a row, falling to No. 23 North Carolina, 56-29, in front of 51,000 fans at Kenan Stadium.

Liberty led the game, 22-21, midway through the third quarter. However, the Tar Heels scored four touchdowns during a four-minute span, aided by three Liberty turnovers, to regain the lead and secure the home-opening victory.

Liberty was led offensively by Todd Macon, who was named Big South Freshman of the Week. The redshirt freshman running back rushed for 67 yards and two touchdowns in his first game in a Liberty uniform.

Defensive lineman Dominique Davis finished the game with a career-best nine tackles, while returning All-America safety Jacob Hagen had eight stops and returned a fumble 27 yards for a touchdown.

The contest marked the first time Liberty had faced a nationally ranked FBS opponent in program history, with the Tar Heels entering last week ranked No. 23 in both the Associated Press and the USA Today Coaches polls.
