LFSN Game On Looks at FCS-FBS Matchups
LFSN Game On reporter Alan York takes a look at the recent trend in college football with more FCS programs beating FBS teams each year.
Last year, 16 FCS teams (Football Championship Subdivision) defeated FBS programs (Football Bowl Subdivision), setting an all-time high between the two Division I subdivisions.
Since making the move to Division I in 1988, Liberty has defeated two FBS programs (formerly I-A teams). The first time came in 1989 when Liberty defeated Eastern Michigan, 25-24, on Oct. 14 in Ypsilanti, Mich. More recently, the Flames handed Ball State a 27-23 setback in Muncie, Ind., on Sept. 11, 2010.
Liberty will be making its first-ever matchup against a ranked FBS opponent in program history when it faces North Carolina on Saturday at Kenan Stadium. Following a 7-6 season in 2013, the Tar Heels enters 2014 ranked No. 23 in both the AP and USA Today polls.
