2014 Training Camp Position Preview: QB
During the month of August, LibertyFlames.com will preview each position on Liberty's football roster before the Flames open the season on the road at North Carolina on Aug. 30.
LibertyFlames.com continues its series today by looking at the Flames' quarterback, a group that is led by two-year starter Josh Woodrum.
Woodrum was an All-Big South second-team selection in 2013 and was named to the College Sporting News National All-Stars listing. He led the Flames and ranked No. 1 in the Big South in passing yards (2,581) and passing touchdowns (19).
The Roanoke, Va., native threw multiple touchdowns in six of Liberty's 12 games and surpassed 200 passing yards six times. He also did some damage on the ground, rushing for a career-high five touchdowns and 154 yards.
He finished the year with a 150.49 pass efficiency rating, the fourth-best, single-season mark in program history.
Woodrum has already received preseason recognition this year, having been named to the Big South preseason all-conference team and the College Football Performance Awards Quarterback Watch List.
With the starting position for Liberty's No. 1 signal caller well in place, the watch during preseason training camp was who would back up Woodrum in 2014.
Javon Shashaty played in all 12 games in 2013, serving as Liberty's starting holder, as well as receiving time under center during his redshirt freshman season. He completed 15-of-17 passing attempts for 205 yards and threw his first career touchdown pass against Kentucky Wesleyan.
Shashaty finished training camp sharing the back-up role on the depth chart with redshirt freshman Stephon Masha. The native of Austell, Ga., threw for 4,222 yards and 38 touchdowns during his junior and senior years at South Cobb High School.
LibertyFlames.com will continue its position previews on Thursday when the website takes a look at the Liberty's tight ends and full backs.
