2014 Training Camp Position Preview: CBs
During the month of August, LibertyFlames.com will preview each position on Liberty's football roster before the Flames open the season on the road at North Carolina on Aug. 30.
LibertyFlames.com continues its series today by looking at the Flames' corner backs, a positon that will be looking for new leadership following the graduation of two players currently in the NFL.
Walt Aikens finished off his career at Liberty by tying for the team lead in tackles in 2013. The boundary cornerback recorded 62 stops last season, including a team-high 50 solo tackles, and six pass breakups.
Playing opposite Aikens was Kevin Fogg at field corner, who finished the season with 44 tackles, including 35 solo stops, and seven pass breakups. The pair combined to record seven of Liberty's 19 interceptions, helping the Flames finish the season ranked No. 5 in the country in interceptions.
In May, Aikens was selected in the fourth round of the 2014 NLF Draft, becoming the seventh player in program history to be picked in the draft. Fogg joined him later in the summer when he signed a free agent contract with the same NFL franchise.
Looking to fill the void left by Aikens and Fogg's graduation will be Kenny Scott (BC) and Wesley Scott (FC), a pair of players that received significant playing time in 2013 in a reserve role to prepare them for this upcoming season.
Kenny Scott started five contests for the Flames (when Liberty opened the game in a nickel defensive package) and ranked fifth on the team with 45 tackles (26 solo, 19 assisted), to go along with three interceptions.
Wesley Scott was one of a handful of true freshmen to see significant playing time in 2013, playing in all 12 games and recording 33 tackles (20 solo, 13 assisted).
Backing up the two slated to start at the cornerback position will be a pair of highly touted recruits that redshirted in 2013 in Justin Guillory (R-Fr., 6-0, 180) and Tyrin Holloway (R-Fr., 6-0, 190).
LibertyFlames.com will continue its position previews on Saturday when the website looks at Liberty's defensive line, while Sunday's preseason training camp coverage will feature an interview with Kenny Scott.
