Winthrop Outscores Liberty, 19-14
Morgan Becker and Sam Struss notched four goals apiece, but it was not enough as the Liberty lacrosse team fell to Big South foe Winthrop, 19-14, on Friday evening at Liberty Lacrosse Field. In addition to her four goals, Becker snagged a single-game program record 12 draw controls.
With the defeat, the Lady Flames' record drops to 2-14 overall and 1-5 in conference play. The Eagles improve their overall record to 6-10 on the season and even up their league mark at 3-3.
Kasmarik tallied two more markers, before the Lady Flames' Michaela Rich found the back of the net off of an assist from Kelly Garrett, tying the contest at three apiece with 11:36 remaining until halftime.
Winthrop outscored Liberty 7-1 over the next 9:24 to take a 10-4 advantage. Kasmarik notched two more goals during the run, giving the Eagles' leading scorer five first-half scores.
The Lady Flames ended the first half well, scoring a pair of markers within a 19-second span. Britton and Becker delivered a goal each for the home team, sending the contest to the halftime break with Winthrop leading 10-6.
Liberty struck first in the second half as Sam Struss fired a shot in between the pipes off of a pass from Brown. Struss' second tally of the match pulled the Lady Flames within three, at 10-7.
The Eagles pushed their edge back to five goals at 25:06, after goals from Shannon Gallagher and Kasmarik.
The Lady Flames continued to battle back, reeling off three consecutive scores to cut into the five-goal deficit. Rich notched her second goal of the game and 17th of the year, before Becker registered her second and third tallies of the contest. Becker's third score came on a free-position attempt with 19:31 left in the game.
The back-and-forth affair continued as the Eagles scored a pair of goals in less than a minute, increasing their lead to 14-10 with 17 minutes showing on the game clock.
After both teams traded goals, Nina Dunay scored off of an assist by Kelly Belue at 11:15. Dunay's 20th marker of the season pulled the home team within three, at 15-12, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the contest.
Winthrop outscored Liberty 4-2 over the final 9:39 to earn the 19-14 victory. The Lady Flames' final two scores came from Struss and Becker.
In the statistical line, Liberty grabbed 20 draw controls to Winthrop's 15. The Eagles held the edge in shots, 29-21, ground balls, 16-12, and caused turnovers, 9-5.
Kasmarik finished with a game-high seven goals, while teammate Gallagher had a contest-best five assists and four ground balls. Rich and Winthrop's Paige Jenkins each caused a pair of turnovers to lead both teams.
In goal, Liberty's Kristen Masullo denied seven shots, while Camille King registered four saves en route to the victory for the Eagles.
The Lady Flames wrap up the regular season on Sunday with a home contest against Longwood at 1 p.m. Prior to the game, Liberty will honor its four seniors, Dunay, Jillian Krick, Masullo and Jen Moyer, as part of Senior Day activities.
