Chanticleers Earn Doubleheader Sweep of Liberty With 10-2 Win
Coastal Carolina totaled six runs over the last three innings, pulling away for a 10-2 win over Liberty to earn a doubleheader sweep of the Lady Flames, Saturday at CCU Softball Stadium.
The Chanticleers' record advances to 25-11, including 7-1 against Big South opponents. Liberty is now 6-30, with a 1-10 league mark following its third setback in a row.
Coastal's Ashley Bagwell (8-6) earned the complete-game win, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six and walking three.
Liberty starter Annah Jo Brittingham (2-18) sustained the setback after yielding three runs on two hits with one strikeout and two walks in one inning pitched. Alyssa DiMartino gave up four runs on seven hits in four innings of work, while Grace Nordan allowed three runs on two hits in 2/3 innings pitched.
Kory Hayden went 3-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBIs, while Amanda Daneker went 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs. Morgan Noad hit 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
For Liberty, Megan Robinson batted 2-for-3 with a double, home run and two RBIs. DiMartino, Blair Lawrence and Katie Han all posted one single, with Lawrence stealing her 10th base of the season.
Robinson doubled with one out in the top of the first, and Allen hit a drive to the wall in center, which Donovan caught for the second out. Bagwell struck out Nichols for the third out.
Coastal put three runs on the scoreboard during its first time at bat. Chiusano drew a leadoff walk, and stole second. Noad later hit a two-out RBI single, and Daneker followed with a two-run blast down the left field line. Brittingham fanned Jessie Winans, sending the game to the second with a 3-0 score.
Bagwell and Liberty reliever DiMartino traded 1-2-3 innings in the second frame.
Liberty trimmed the deficit to 3-2 with two third-inning tallies. Lawrence walked with one out, and after a Katie Zavodny strikeout, Robinson hit her team-best seventh homer of the season, narrowing the gap to one run.
Hayden hit a solo shot with one out in the third, extending the lead to 4-2. Noad and Daneker followed with consecutive singles, before a flyout and groundout ended the inning.
The Chanticleers doubled their total score to eight by scoring four times in the bottom of the fourth. Hayden hit a two-run, ground-rule double with one out off of relief pitcher Nordan, good for a 6-2 edge. A pair of bases-loaded walks pushed the score to 8-2, before DiMartino re-entered the circle and got Rasley to ground to third for the third out.
The Lady Flames loaded the bases with nobody out in the fifth, as Han walked, followed by consecutive singles from DiMartino and Lawrence. Bagwell escaped unscathed, striking out the next two batters and getting Kelby Allen to ground into a fielder's choice.
Liberty staged a two-out rally during the top of the sixth, as Sciolino walked and Han singled to center. DiMartino then popped out to her counterpart Bagwell, ending the threat.
Coastal Carolina scored twice in the bottom of the sixth, ending the game via run rule, 10-2, when Sara Rasley hit a sacrifice fly to score Coastal's 10th run of the contest.
The Lady Flames and Chanticleers will wrap up this weekend's series tomorrow, with a single game beginning at 1 p.m. at CCU Softball Stadium.
