NCCU Shuts Out Lady Flames, 4-0
The Liberty softball team sustained a 4-0 setback to the visiting North Carolina Central Lady Eagles, during game one of a doubleheader, Saturday at Liberty Softball Field.
With the win, NCCU improves its record to 4-18, while the Lady Flames are now 3-24. Liberty left eight runners on base, while the Eagles stranded five.
N.C. Central's London Booker (2-9) pitched a complete-game six-hitter , striking out three and walking one.
Annah Jo Brittingham (2-14) yielded four runs (two earned) on seven hits while tying her season high with six strikeouts.
De'Onna Smith went 2-for-3 with a homer, two stolen bases, two runs scored and two RBIs for the Eagles.
Katie Zavodny batted 2-for-4 with a triple for the Lady Flames. Hanna Nichols, Sammi Shivock, Marybeth Sciolino and Jamie Crisp all singled, with Crisp's single serving as her first career base hit.
Brittingham struck out two batters in a 1-2-3 first inning, and then Booker worked around a leadoff single by Zavodny in the bottom of the first.
The visitors got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the second. After a leadoff single, an error put runners on second and third with nobody out. After Jenny Tracy hit into a 9-2 double play, Smith scored on an error by Brittingham, making it 1-0.
NCCU doubled its lead to 2-0 in the third frame, when a two-out throwing error allowed Tiphany Jackson to score from second.
Liberty advanced a runner to third base in both the third and fourth innings, but was unable to cash in. Zavodny hit a two-out triple in the third, but a running catch ended the rally.
The Eagles' Smith made it to third base during the fourth, singling and moving over on a stolen base and a wild pitch. However, Martha Batie recorded a groundout, ending the inning.
During the bottom of the fourth, Nichols singled with two outs, stole second, and went to third on a throwing error. Booker then struck out Holly Seiz for the third out.
N.C. Central added two tallies in the top of the sixth, as Smith launched a home run to left with one out and one on, making it 4-0, Lady Eagles.
Robinson was hit by a pitch after one out in the sixth, and a Shivock single and Nichols walk loaded the bases with two away. Katie Han then bounced into a fielder's choice, leaving three on base.
After a scoreless NCCU half of the seventh, Crisp and Sciolino hit back-to-back singles to begin the Lady Flames' last time at bat. Booker got the final three outs on a foulout, fielder's choice and flyout, sealing the 4-0 shutout win for the guests.
