Big South and the Kay Yow Cancer Fund Team Up for its 2014 Play 4Kay Campaign
The Big South Conference is partnering with the Kay Yow Cancer Fund to host its 2014 Play 4Kay Campaign. Through the 2013-14 academic year, student-athletes from each member institution of the Big South Conference will host an athletic event or a series of events as "Play 4Kay" games to raise awareness and funds in support of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. The Big South Conference is the first Division I conference to formally adopt the Kay Yow Cancer Fund as its conference-wide charitable beneficiary.
The Liberty athletics department is in the process of organizing several "Play 4Kay" contests during the spring semester. More details to follow.
The Kay Yow Cancer Fund's Play 4Kay is its annual, nation-wide initiative that invites student athletes, coaches and communities to host athletic events as a platform for fundraising and awareness. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund is a charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women's cancers. Since 2007, the Play 4Kay campaign has raised more than $2.6 million to support the Kay Yow Cancer Fund's mission of funding scientific research and assisting the underserved.
The organization's founder Kay Yow, the late N.C. State head women's basketball coach, believed that coaches not only share a profession but a community. Coach Yow's vision for the Fund encompassed not only her wish to fund women's cancer research but also her desire for coaches and student-athletes to enrich their lives by serving others. Her goal was for a nation of coaches and their student-athletes to come together "as one" to raise awareness and funds to support women's cancer research; and each year that goal is realized through the Kay Yow Cancer Fund's Play 4Kay initiative.
"Coach Yow knew that if motivated coaches, student-athletes and a dedicated community came together, they could enact meaningful change on and off the playing field," said Sue Donohoe, executive director, Kay Yow Cancer Fund. "This collaboration between the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and the Big South Conference exemplifies this spirit of teamwork and generosity. We thank the Big South member institutions, the Big South Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and the conference staff for their commitment and support of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund through hosting their conference-wide Play 4Kay initiative."
"The Big South Conference and its member institutions are excited and proud to partner with the Kay Yow Cancer Fund this year," said Big South Conference Associate Commissioner Dawn Turner. "Our student-athletes and administrators look forward to an outstanding partnership with the Fund."
Big South Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee chair Juli Osborne (women's basketball student-athlete, Campbell University) added, "Our partnership with the Kay Yow Cancer Fund will be beneficial, both for our Conference institutions as we raise funds and awareness for women's cancers, but also for those who we will benefit through this year-long effort. We are excited to begin our initiative!"
