Christiansen Paces Liberty at Pre-National Invite
Junior Jacy Christiansen placed 49th in the women's 6K white race, highlighting Liberty's performance at Saturday's ISU Pre-National Invitational at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course. Meanwhile, Josh MacDonald's 109th-place finish made him the top Flame in the men's 8K blue race.
The Lady Flames scored 666 points, placing 31st of 35 teams in the white race. California edged Virginia Tech for the team title, scoring 105 points to the Hokies' 107.
In the men's blue race, Liberty finished 37th out of 52 squads, all of which appear in the most recent regional rankings. The Flames totaled 849 points while putting three runners under 25 minutes for the rolling 8K course. No. 2 Colorado took home the team championship with 90 points, while No. 4 Oregon was the runner-up with 113 tallies.
Women's 6K White Race Recap
Christiansen completed the course in 22:01.91, shaving 36 seconds off of her previous 6K personal best for 49th place out of 227 entrants. She was the top Big South finisher on the day, outdistancing Campbell's Samantha Robbins by 14 seconds and 14 places.
Freshman Jessie Proehl ran well in her 6K debut, clocking a time of 22:49.24 for 105th place. Fellow freshman Chelsea Page followed in the 154th spot, crossing the line in 23:21.38.
Competing in her first cross country race of the 2013 season, redshirt senior Lyndi Fielitz lopped 1:15 off of her previous best 6K time. Her 23:43.10 effort earned a 181st-place finish. Senior Katie Russo finished nearly simultaneously with her teammate, clocking a 23:43.15 for 182nd place.
Freshmen Kat Bouton (206th place, 24:18.46) and Alexis Taylor (210th place, 24:31.25) rounded out the Lady Flames' seven competitors.
Men's 8K Blue Race Recap
For the second straight race, MacDonald served as the Flames' No. 1 runner. The California native raced to 109th place of 359 competitors in an 8K time of 24:41.51.
Senior Caleb Edmonds followed in 132nd place, posting a 24:49.42. Sophomore Jeremie Bourget was Liberty's third sub-25:00 performer, ending up at 24:59.26 and in 158th place.
Zach Barker was Liberty's fourth finisher on the day, covering the course in 25:16.15 for the 218th position. Sophomore Sam Hibbs closed out the Flames' scorers with a 232nd-place showing in 25:20.44.
Ngetich Kipchirchir was 263rd in 25:35.63, while Jarred Cornfield came in 309th with a 26:04.85 clocking.
Liberty will take next weekend off from competition before returning to action on Nov. 2 at the Big South Cross Country Championships in Buena Vista, Va. The meet at the Vista Links Golf Course will begin with the men's 8K championship at 10:30 a.m. and wrap up with the women's 5K championship at 11:30. Both the Flames and Lady Flames are the defending Big South champions.
