Jacob Onifer came in 16th among Division I men's runners at Friday's Royal Cross Country Challenge.

Redshirt sophomore Jacob Onifer was Liberty's highest finisher at Friday afternoon's Royal Cross Country Challenge at McAlpine Creek Park, placing 16th among Division I runners in the men's 8K.

Onifer finished in a time of 26:33.7, running four seconds faster than he did at the same meet in 2012. That enabled the Buckeye State native to cross the finish line second among Big South entrants.

Meanwhile, freshman Lindsey Bray was the fastest of the four Lady Flames to race on Friday, placing 21st of 51 in the Division I section. She notched the best 5K time of her young collegiate career by 57 seconds, posting a 19:13.4.

Senior Jessica Gass followed in a time of 19:30.8, which was good for 28th place. Freshman Megan Versen (20:35.4, 37th place) and redshirt freshman Kaitlyn Hutchins (21:28.1, 40th place) each recorded cross country 5K personal-best clockings.

Liberty will be back in action on Oct. 19, when the top seven Flames and the top seven Lady Flames travel to Terre Haute, Ind., for the ISU Pre-National Invitational. Liberty will go head to head with a number of nationally ranked opponents at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, site of the 2013 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. The first race of the day will begin at 11 a.m.
