Liberty Leads Commonwealth in Conference Championships

Liberty's men's and women's track & field and cross country teams provided the Flames with five of its 10 conference championships during the 2012-13 athletics season.

Liberty's 2012-13 athletics season ranked as one of the best in Virginia this year as Liberty led all Commonwealth programs with 10 conference championships.

The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) recently released their 2012-13 All-Sports Championship survey and Liberty's 10 conference titles were tops among Division I athletics programs in the Commonwealth.

This marked the fourth year in a row Liberty has led all Division I programs in Virginia in conference titles won. During the four-year span, Liberty has claimed a total of 34 conference titles (2009-10: 8; 2010-11: 8; 2011-12: 8 and 2012-13: 10).

William & Mary ranked second on the VaSID All-State Championship survey list with six conference titles, followed by Virginia's five league championships.

During the 2012-13 season, Liberty captured Big South titles in the following programs: baseball, football, men's basketball, men's cross country, men's indoor track & field, men's outdoor track & field, volleyball, women's basketball, women's cross country and women's outdoor track & field.

Liberty was the only NCAA Division I program in the country to capture conference titles in football, men's and women's basketball and baseball.

Liberty's 10 conference titles during the 2012-13 athletics year rank second nationally among all NCAA Division I programs. Princeton led the country with 11 of its 31 athletics programs claiming conference titles. Liberty tied for second nationally with Stanford, who has 10 of its 36 varsity programs captured conference titles.

The survey also included the release of the 35th annual VaSID Division I All-Sport Championship winner, which was claimed by VCU.

The Rams won 65.5 percent of their athletics events in 2012-13 (170-87-10), upending Virginia's run of five-straight VaSID All-Sport Championship trophies. The Cavaliers finished second in the listing for the first time since 2006-07, having posted a 63.7 winning percentage this athletics season (267-151-5).

Liberty's winning percentage of 56.3 percent (208-161-6) finished fifth on the all-state listing. Liberty also ranked eighth in the men's all-state listing (51.0 percent/76-73-3) and third in the women's all-state rankings (59.9 percent/132-88-3).

Liberty was one of four Division I Commonwealth programs to win more than 200 events during the 2012-13 campaign with 208 victories. The Flames were joined by Virginia (267 wins), Virginia Tech (216) and James Madison (202) on the 200-plus win list.

Liberty led all Division I athletics programs in the Virginia in total women's program victories with 132 wins. James Madison was next on the list with 131 wins, followed by Norfolk State (125), Virginia (119) and Virginia Tech (108).
