Spring Football Update with Desmond Rice
Continuing in its coverage of Liberty's annual spring practice, FSN reporter Alan York visited today with running back Desmond Rice and running backs coach Jamaal Fobbs.
Following the graduation of Liberty's three-year starting running back Sirchauncey Holloway, the Flames will look to some of their younger upcoming backs to step up and take the bulk of the carries during the 2013 season.
Rice has been the Flames' predominately featured running back during spring practice following the suspension of all-Big South running back Aldreakis Allen (1,019 yards, 10 TDs) midway through spring workouts.
During the 2012 season, Rice saw playing time in 10 out of 11 games and got the start in the backfield when the Flames faced No. 14/12 Montana on the road.
Rice finished the year with 11 carries for 41 yards, while adding eight receptions for 109 yards as another pass catching option for the Flames. His first career receiving touchdown was a memorable one. Rice caught a screen pass from Brian Hudson and ran 49 yards for a touchdown, jumpstarting Liberty's upset victory over No. 6/8 Stony Brook during the Flames' home finale.
On the practice field today, Liberty held its 15th and final practice of the spring, running a more special team focused practice.
The next time the Flames take to the William Stadium turf as an entire team will be in August when they open training camp to prepare for Liberty's season-opener against Kent State on Aug. 29.
