Jay Calvo

Assistant Coach

College: Liberty ('09)
Start Date: 8/1/2009
Email: rjcalvo@liberty.edu

Jay Calvo is currently in his fourth year as a member of the Flames' coaching staff, after finishing up a successful collegiate career for Liberty during the 2008-09 season. Calvo spent his first two years with the program as a graduate assistant and was promoted to full-time assistant status prior to the start of the 2011-12 season.

Calvo has helped head coach Jeff Thomas bring the golf program to new heights during his time on staff, culminating in 2011 when Liberty captured it first-ever Big South Men's Golf Championship.

With Calvo's assistance, the Flames have bested their program season stroke average the last two seasons. Liberty posted a 294.45 stroke average in 2009-10 and a 288.31 stroke average during its conference championship during the 2010-11 season.

Liberty has dominated the Big South's major annual awards during Calvo's time on the Flames coaching staff. Robert Karlsson has taken home Big South Golfer of the Year the past two seasons, while Liberty has secured Big South Rookie of the Year honors the last three years (Robert Karlsson in 2009, Max McKay in 2010 and Chase Marinell in 2011).

Calvo worked extensively with Liberty's latest Big South Men's Golf Championship individual medalist, Preston Dembowiak. The senior captured his first collegiate career win during the 2011 championship event, posting a career-best seven-under par 209 at The Patriot Golf Club in Ninety Six, S.C.

During his playing days at Liberty, Calvo was a two-time Big South All-Academic team member (2008 and 2009) and is one of nine golfers in program history to be named to the Golf Coaches Association of America Scholastic All-America team in 2008.

On the course, Calvo finished his career with a 75.5 stroke average that led to five Top 10 finishes, including a fourth-place showing at the Spring Invite at Crosswinds Golf Course, March 12-13, 2007, where he carded an even par 144 (73-71).

Calvo helped Liberty capture four team titles during his four-year career for the Flames. He also was part of Liberty's 2006 squad that received an at-large team bid to the NCAA East Regionals during his freshman season, where the rookie was among the starting five that participated May 18-20, 2006, at the par-72, 7,179-yard Lake Nona Golf Club in Orlando, Fla.

The native of Baird, Texas, was a four-year letterwinner at Baird High School and is currently engaged to marry Kayla Newbold. He graduated from Liberty in 2009 with a bachelor of science degree in sport management and earned a MBA from Liberty in 2011.
