Royal Brettrager II rounds out LibertyFlames.com's coverage of Liberty's national qualifiers leading into the 2011 NCAA Wrestling Championships. The Flames Sports Network's Alan York chats with the freshman about his upcoming tournament where he will compete at 174 pounds.
Brettrager II is the fourth Liberty qualifier headed to Philadelphia, where the national event will be contested at the Wells Fargo Center, March 17-19.
Head Coach Jesse Castro has commented on Royal Brettrager II all season as being a tireless worker and only having one speed of training, which is hard. His work has certainly paid off, as the freshman has earned his way into the field for the 2011 NCAA Wrestling Championships.
At the end of a somewhat streaky year, Brettrager has begun to turn it on again, winning his previous three bouts with two coming by fall coming into last week's NCAA East Regional. The Kirtland, Ohio, native began his collegiate career in the same manner, earning wins in four of his first five bouts, with each victory coming by fall. Brettrager now holds a 13-11 record on the season, looking to notch more wins in Philadelphia.
Brettrager made easy work of his regional foes, earning the 174-pound weight-class title at the NCAA East Regional Championship with two victories. In the opening round against Gardner-Webb's Erin O'Dell, Brettrager opened up a 6-1 advantage through one period and never looked back, defeating his opponent, 12-3.
In his championship bout, the freshman seemed to be in trouble after a couple quick takedowns from Campbell's Peter Comis. However, one sequence of moves late in the opening period ended the match, with Brettrager scoring a takedown which led into a pin (2:31).
No. 2 seed, and fellow freshman, Ed Ruth of Penn State will serve as Brettrager's opening-round opponent for the 2011 NCAA Wrestling Championships. The two have not met this season. The winner of that match up is slated to meet the winner between unseeded grapplers, Scott Glasser of Minnesota and Patrick Martinez of Wyoming.
The final day of previws for the 2011 NCAA Wrestling Championships wraps up tomorrow, as coach Castro provides an in-depth look at the national event and Liberty's four qualifiers.
