Hernandez, Sherret Win Event Titles at Coastal
Liberty freshman Oasis Hernandez (women's open 100) and junior John Sherret (men's open 1,500) each began the 2014 outdoor track & field season in fine fashion, capturing their respective event titles on Friday at the Coastal Carolina Invitational.
Women's Day One Recap
Liberty's indoor school record holder at 60 and 200 meters, Hernandez clocked a 100 dash time of 12.14 seconds into a slight headwind at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium. The effort just missed the ECAC qualifying standard of 12.08, but put Hernandez 0.69 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.
In the "B" section of the women's pole vault, freshmen Jessie Glynn and Brooke Shelton each cleared 10-11.75 to finish second and third, respectively. They are now tied with Tami Tolsma for ninth place on Liberty's all-time outdoor list for the event.
Liberty freshmen captured two of the top five spots in the open 1,500-meter run, as Hannah Scherlacher came in second at 4:57.67 and Lindsey Bray followed in fifth place at 5:03.69.
Janae Jones was the Lady Flames' top finisher in the "A" section of the women's long jump, leaping 17-3.5 for a ninth-place showing.
Riley Brandon improved her javelin personal best by six and a half feet, reaching 117-4 for 14th place out of 55 entrants.
Men's Day One Recap
Normally an 800-meter specialist, Sherret found success at the 1,500-meter distance on Friday. The junior's time of 4:00.94 was more than seven seconds faster than his previous personal best and won the event by four seconds.
ConRoy Smith also achieved a personal-best mark during the outdoor season opener, long jumping 22-7 to place fifth in the "A" section of the event.
The Coastal Carolina Invitational will conclude on Saturday, with the day's first events beginning at 10 a.m.
