Jacob DeValve placed sixth in the men's shot put on Friday.

Liberty redshirt senior Jacob DeValve placed sixth in the men's shot put, marking the Flames' highest finish on Friday at the Hilton Garden Innvitational at JDL Fast Track.

DeValve, who had placed third in the 2013 Big South indoor men's shot put final during his most recent visit to the facility, uncorked a season-best 50-10 throw on his very first attempt of the afternoon. That effort held up for sixth place in the men's shot put competition and moved the team captain up to third place on the Big South performance list this season.

Teammate Tim Abbott also recorded a lofty finish in the men's shot put, placing 10th of 47 competitors with a top mark of 46-9.

In the women's shot put, junior Jennifer Nicholson reached 40-2.75 to earn an 11th-place finish.

Freshman Oasis Hernandez was Liberty's top performer on the track, racing to a time of 7.81 seconds in her collegiate 60-meter dash debut. It was the 22th-fastest time in the 60 prelims, earning the Kansas native a spot in Saturday's semifinal round at 11:20 a.m.

The Lady Flames' distance medley relay quartet of Jessica Gass, Kaitlyn Hutchins, Megan Versen and Lindsey Bray won their heat with a time of 13:10.09, coming in seventh overall.

Sophomore Mary Echols was the Lady Flames' best finisher in the 400-meter dash. Her 1:00.73 clocking was good for 37th place out of 90 entrants.

In the women's 800-meter run, freshman Susan Tenberg recorded a season-best 2:28.24 effort, netting 46th place of 74.

The Hilton Garden Innvitational will resume Saturday at 9 a.m. with the women's weight throw.
