Lady Flames Finish Play at Panther Invitational
The Liberty Lady Flames tennis squad wrapped up action this morning at the Panther Invitational, hosted by FIU. The Lady Flames produced singles wins from seven out of their nine competitors and doubles victories from three out of five doubles tandems. For the weekend, Liberty notched eight singles wins and three doubles victories in its final tournament of the fall season.
In doubles tilts, Liberty got a win each from Valerie Thong and Brittany Yang, Nicola Wellman and Rebekah Jenkins and Lauren Mabe and Mariely Hassey. Thong and Yang won against Bettina Botha and Johanna Sterkel of Florida Gulf Coast (FGCU), 9-8. Wellman and Jenkins posted a win in their only match, defeating Giulietta Boha and Kamila Pavelkova of FIU, 8-6. Mabe and Hassey also went 1-0, knocking off Boha and Valentina Briceno, 8-6.
Wellman went a perfect 2-0 in singles play in the No. 4 draw, collecting straight-set wins against Briceno, 6-0, 6-4 and Barry's Jasi Witherspoon, 6-1, 6-1.
Competing in the No. 2 singles draw, Belen Rivera tallied a first round victory over Elizabeth Means of FGCU, 7-5, 6-2. Mabe and Jenkins also recorded a win apiece in the No. 2 draw. Mabe ousted Means, 6-4, 3-6, 10-4, while Jenkins knocked off Boha, 6-4, 7-5.
Maria Khval picked up a victory against Sterkel, 7-5, 6-2, in the No. 1 singles draw. In the No. 3 draw, Cameron Richard and Brittany Yang each won their first round matches. Richard downed Witherspoon in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3. Yang rallied from a one-set deficit to defeat Tina Mohorcic of FIU, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1.
