Liberty Earns GCAA Team Academic Honors
For the third time in the last four years, Liberty has been named to the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Team Academic Awards list, honoring the top academic golf programs in the country.
A total of 143 collegiate programs met the GCAA standard of a 3.0 or higher team GPA, which included programs from the NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA and NJCAA levels.
Brown (Division I), Post (Division II), Greensboro College (Division III), Embry Riddle – Ariz. (NAIA), Scottsdale CC (NJCAA DI) and South Mountain CC (NJCAA DII) were the top programs at each level this year.
Liberty was also named to the GCAA Team Academic Awards list in 2010 and 2011. During that same span of time, the Flames have had three individual players recognized as GCAA/Cleveland Golf All?America Scholars (Preston Dembowiak – 2010 & 2011; Ian McConnell – 2013; Max McKay – 2013).
Under the direction of head coach Jeff Thomas, Liberty made its third-straight NCAA Regional appearance this past season as an at-large selection to the NCAA Fayetteville Regional in Fayetteville, Ark.
Liberty finished the year with a final ranking of No. 44 by Golfstat and No. 38 by Golfweek. At the midway point of the Flames' season, Liberty garnered the program's highest rankings (No. 24 by Golfstat, No. 18 by Golfweek and No. 23 in the Golf World/Nike Division I Coaches poll).
