Smith Places 22nd in NCAA Men's Shot Put Final
Liberty redshirt senior Ryan Smith wrapped up his stellar collegiate career with a 22nd-place finish in the men's shot put final, Wednesday evening at the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. He threw 57-6.5 at the meet contested at Oregon's Hayward Field.
Making his NCAA national meet debut, Smith threw 56-4.75 in the opening round and fouled his second attempt before improving to 57-6.5 on his third and final throw. Smith tied Iowa State's Jan Jeuschede as the competition's 21st-longest thrower, but the Cyclone was awarded 21st place with a superior second mark.
Smith can now add honorable mention All-American to his impressive list of accolades. The Georgia native departs Liberty as a 10-time Big South champion, including distinction as the only athlete in Big South history to sweep an event's (shot put) indoor and outdoor conference titles for four consecutive years.
The Flames' Mychelle Cumings and Isaac Wendland will both be in action on Thursday. Cumings will compete in the women's discus, which is set to begin at 5 p.m. Eastern. Wendland will race in the men's 1,500-meter run semifinals at 7:45 p.m. Eastern.
